Since I have a reputation for being filmic curmudgeon, only liking
dreary art films and foreign fare, I thought I'd uh, humanize myself
with this STAR WARS report:
Resurrecting this "old" topic --
Yes, Kirby finally went to see one of the prequel STAR WARS films. I
went with my college age nephew to see SITH last night, and I found it
entertaining if wildly uneven. I guess that uneven is a word that
people use when they can't figure out whether they liked a film or not.
I'll tell you what I liked about the film.
1) The score. John Williams wrapped up all those STAR WARS themes and
repackaged them in a smart new way. I noticed the score.
2) Digital presentation. I was lucky to see this film projected in the
Christie digital 2K presentation. This is the new 70mm! Not quite as
bright as good 70mm, but sharp and smooth. It's bye bye
film, and after seeing this I don't think it will be that long. It's a
different experience because that flicker isn't exactly GONE, but
it's reduced enormously. Lots of color. Of course, this film with all
it's cgi is the perfect show-off vehicle for this. I was continuously
fascinated by this aspect of the experience.
3) The effects, of course. It's a cornucopia of special effects, some
of them quite imaginative, others over the top.
The script and acting were...uh..uneven..., classy one moment and
downright cornball the next. MacGregor tries valiantly to give some
gravitas to the proceedings, but I felt like Hayden Christiansen didn't
quite have the stuff to go from light to dark. But he looks good with
a sword. I still hold to my belief that Lucas is a quite ordinary
director, if an extraordinary entrepreneur.
Anyway, my nephew and I had fun.....
