TO OUR U. K. FRIENDS:
The world and America mourns for you. The steadfast solidarity of your
leader towards our nation is a debt which can never be repaid. It's small
solace to exchange one for the other as the death toll climbs higher and
higher, but know that a little while ago, I went out to the store to replace
the American flag that has hung outside our home since 9/11/01 with that of
the Great Britain's Union Jack. As I told another friend in the UK,
whatever our differences, in the aftermath of yesterday's joyous news of
London winning the bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012 (now so quickly
bitterly surpassed), America's roots are impossible to dismiss. They
stretch across the Atlantic to your islands in Europe. In this regard, some
of us have always felt, despite trying circumstances, that the United
Kingdom, including its entire commonwealth of nations such as Australia, as
the wiser and bigger sisters of America. Your people in fact invented and
founded America, almost 2 1/2 centuries ago. It is upon this foundation
that our heartfelt thanks and condolences are extended, that all that's fun
and frivolous temporarily takes a back seat until we get our bearings before
we move on (and it won't take long). We've long stopped being unrealistic
about our place in a turbulent world, but we will laugh again, we will
perservere. Terrorists (and I'll never understand why the press calls
suicide bombers or the culprits of such attacks "insurgents"), have, on the
contrary, strengthened the resolve and the bonds between like-minded
nations. The war on terror may never be won, but to cower from it is the
result these murderers seek to achieve. They no doubt at this moment, are
celebrating victoriously. I'm not a religious man. Nevertheless, my
prayers, feeble as they may be, are with your entire nation.
