Natalie,
Wire transfers used to be halfway reasonable in the States. Anywhere from
$8 to $10 for quite a while. Then the price suddenly jumped.
The main problem with giving out your bank routing and account number is
that these days so many website let people buy things on-line with an
"electronic check" -- all they have to do is give them the bank routing number
and account number of their checking account and the website will withdraw the
money electronically from the checking account just as if the person had sent
them a paper check and they deposited it. The problem is, these websites do
absolutely nothing to verify that the person giving them the routing number and
account number is actually the person who owns that checking account! This is an
area wide-open for fraud and I expect it to become a big problem in the near
future.
Of course, every time you write a check and give it to someone, they have
the routing number and checking account number printed right there on the bottom
of the check. Again, this is a habit left over from an earlier time and I expect
banks will shortly wake up to the fact that printing that information on the
check is a serious security flaw... of course, that means they'll have to figure
out another way to process them -- or simply disallow the whole concept of
"e-checks" (which would solve the whole thing).
