Darcy,
Perhaps "bozo" was a bit harsh... please understand that as the operator of
MoviePosterBid.com I am called on all the time to settle disputes between buyers
and sellers -- half of which would have never occurred in the first place if the
buyer had read the auction page carefully and the other half could
have been avoided if the auction description had been written more clearly
and precisely. For that reason, I'm in favor of seller's including more details
in an auction description, rather than less. Since PayPal has become so
prevalent in auction payments, I think if a seller doesn't accept PayPal they
should make a note of it in the body of the auction description, not merely
leave it off of the list of payment options that appears at the top of the page.
Far too many people don't read that information (or don't read it carefully). If
you have only had 2 out of 200 who didn't read it, you're to be congratulated on
having an exceptional group of intelligent, first-rate customers. My experience
has been that an awful lot of people don't take the time to read everything on
the auction page carefully -- and that too many sellers leave out too much
information in their descriptions, which encourages disappointments,
misunderstandings and anger during the completion of the transaction.
So, while you're quite correct that if you "leave it out" of the list of
payment options you will accept, then an intelligent bidder who reads
the whole page carefully should be able to figure out that you don't take
PayPal. But I just think it would be better for all concerned for sellers
who don't take it to make a specific note to that effect -- just to save
themselves and their bidders the hassle of misunderstandings later.
I'll be the first one to agree with you about PayPal fees. They are
outrageous. On the other hand, I'm very surprised that your two buyers were so
happy to go with Bidpay. Last time I looked, Bidpay was charging something like
$8 to the buyer to send a payment, which is even more outrageous than PayPal
(the only difference is that with Bidpay it is the buyer who gets ripped off).

accepted?
I'm going to have to chime in and disagree with
JR on this one.
There is a section of the ebay auction that
states methods of payment accepted. If paypal is there, great. If it isn't or
the logo doesn't appear in the auction... it isn't accepted. Simple as that.
If a seller wants to state they don't accept that is fine... but hardly a
rule.
Quote:
"by refusing
your PayPal payment they have given you a "legal" way to opt-out of the
transaction. You tried to pay them, they refused the payment -- so you
are no longer under any obligation to pay for the item."
Not even close. There is no legal basis for this
one. You may have tried to pay them, but not under a method that is clearly
accepted in their auction description. This does not in any way circumvent the
legal process of a contract. It is still the buyer's obligation to
settle.
Quote:
"I do not consider this seller a "bozo" because they don't accept PayPal
(which is their right) -- but because they don't clearly state their position
in their auction description. That ain't right."
So the part in the auction description that
states forms of payment accepted isn't enough then? I also add what I DO
accept in my description, not what I don't.
The reason I find this issue interesting is that
I live in Canada. Paypal charges exhorbitant fees to sellers outside the US.
(If that has changed, please advise.) In approximately 200 selling transaction
on ebay, I have had 2 people pay with paypal. After I advised them I don't
accept it, they both apologised profusely and said they should have read the
description closer. They immediately used bidpay (Free for sellers outside the
US!). Wasn't a big deal in the least.
Paypal is the biggest, but if you don't live in
the States...
Happy Monday!!!
Darcy

It's considered common courtesy to state clearly in an auction
description if you do NOT accept PayPal. I think sellers should also state
that they DO accept it, just so everything is clear from the start,
but these days it is assumed that you accept PayPal unless you
specifically say you don't.
But, of course, there's no way you can force a seller to
accept PayPal if they don't want to, even if they
didn't say so out front.
Bottom line is, if you want the item you have to go along with the
payment options the seller will accept. However, if you have
decided you don't want the item or don't want to mess with this seller,
by refusing your PayPal payment they have given you a "legal" way to
opt-out of the transaction. You tried to pay them, they refused the payment
-- so you are no longer under any obligation to pay for the item.
Please note: This won't stop the seller from filing a non-paying bidder
complaint against you with eBay if they want to. If they do, you'll
have to deal with sending eBay the proof that you did try to pay
and the seller refused the payment -- that could get messy. Lots
more hassle.
So, unless you feel the method the seller is insisting on is unsafe and
unsecured and could lead to you getting ripped off (unlikely with this high
level of feedback), it's probably best to pay in whatever manner the seller
want and steer clear of that seller in the future if you only want to use
PayPal. Please send the seller's eBay ID name to the MOPO list, so that
we don't fall into the same situation -- I mean, since the seller isn't
stating that they won't take PayPal, it's likely that this happens
with them all the time. You'd think they would wise up and put a clear
"No PayPal" notice in their auction descriptions -- but
they probably doesn't want to discourage bidding, which such a notice
would do. So they put everyone through a big hassle. Please tell us the
eBay ID of this bozo.
PS. Please note that I do not consider this seller a "bozo" because
they don't accept PayPal (which is their right) -- but because they don't
clearly state their position in their auction description. That ain't
right.

accepted?
After putting through a PayPal payment for an auction I
recently won on
eBay, the seller wrote me that he doesn't accept
PayPal. The payment
was refused, alright. But the seller had nothing on
his page that
alerted one to this. I'm not that experienced on this
score, so I
wonder if anyone thinks this is a normal occurence or a
sign to watch
out for. The seller has been on eBay for 3 years and has
some 200
transactions with 100% positive feedback.
Thanks
all,
AlfredoZ
