James Stewart was a man obsessed in VERTIGO, and as a consequence a
little creepy. He was eminently well-cast in a role that showed that
even James Stewarts have a dark side. He was also a little strange (and
a tad miscast) in another Hitch film, ROPE, which was altogether a
little strange itself.
I had the good luck to see Barbara Bel Geddes onstage a couple of
times. She always struck me as someone who gave off the scent of fresh
linen and the sound of common sense. That great combination that she
could be your girl and your best friend, and also give you warm
motherly advice and support made her one of a kind. I also remember her
beautiful early performance in I REMEMBER MAMA, one of my all-time
favorite movies. Goodbye, Barbara, God bless you.
