I was in Louisiana, returning from the Memphis Film Festival. My wife,
Wilene, and I had just stopped at a roadside eatery en route and heard
the news over the diner's outside loudspeakers.
Ironically, the day before, Snuff Garrett -- legendary record
producer, founder of The Nostalgia Merchant -- and my boss for seven years
-- and I were with Felton Jarvis, Elvis' producer at the time, who was
more than just a bit concerned about the rock & roll king's health and his
unwillingness to record. I recall Felton bemoaning, "If he kicks tomorrow, we
don't have a thing in the can." He did and they didn't.
