I was in Houston, Texas, backstage with the Steve Miller band getting
ready to eat after sound check when the news came to us about Elvis.
Oddly enough, I had just met Elvis' amazing guitarist James Burton two
days previously. Burton was wearing his TCB necklace that Elvis had
given him. I commented on it and said it must be great working with
Elvis Presley. Burton shook his head and said, "The guy's a mess. Too
many drugs." It didn't seem possible to me at the time; wasn't Presley
the same guy who accepted an honorary drug agent badge from Nixon?
I remember watching Elvis as a kid and getting that same feeling
you got when you saw The Beatles or Hendrix for the first time, that
sense that there was something really remarkable going on. That all
dissipated when I saw him in one of those stupid jumpsuits for the first
time, and Elvis must have felt the same way deep down inside. He was a
great American tragedy.

Where were you when you learned 28 year's ago today that Elvis
Presley had passed away? That would be August 16, 1977.

    Thanks! Tom Pennock
