International Box Office numbers can be very deceptive until a
film opens in all markets and the final tallies are counted.
For example Sin City just opened this past week in Spain at the
same time the DVD is being released here.

But foreign box office usually makes up 45-70% of a picture's total
box office run, the top four grossing movies of all time had a minimum
of 60% of their box office come from overseas, so it's not a surprise
that War of the Worlds or The Island does similar numbers.
And of course it depends on the star's or character's international appeal.
For instance Spider-man 2 made about $125 million more domestically than
Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban last year, but Harry's international
grosses actually made it a higher grossing picture overall.

David,

Don't you think it's a bizarre world we live in when we can say that a movie like FANTASTIC FOUR which pulled in $287,035,878 in four weeks "tanked"?

And maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any indication in these figures to support the commonly-held notion that non-American audiences are somehow more discerning than we are:

MARCH OF THE PENGUINS only made 20% of its money outside the USA.

WAR OF THE WORLDS made 60% of its money outside the USA.

THE ISLAND did far better outside the USA, pulling in almost 66% of its take overseas(!)

In fact, it looks like the "arty films" do better in the USA than they do elsewhere -- which surprises the heck out of me, but that seems to be what the figures indicate.
