Hello, all, from Joe Bonelli in Wichita Falls, Texas.

I cannot thank all of you enough for the support... that you are giving. Though
I am 600 miles from "the front" I am
still trying to find out things.

Not much has changed since last night.

As I said I've learned two most important things about my "neighborhoods":
1-- My immediate neighborhood may not have much water in it. An interview
occurred at the corner of Saint Charles Avenue and Napoleon Avenue that I saw
last night. This location is about six longish blocks away from where I live.
Napoleon is one street from Jena. Since there was no water at Napoleon and St.
Charles and I saw there WAS water on Tuesday at South Claiborne and Napoleon--
about the same from the other direction, I believe that 2317 Jena is probably
only partially affected by water. The house is an old one-- there is no
basement but there are about three steps up to the front porch. The house has
12-foot ceilings so I suspect that my second-floor "digs" are probably without
water. I know that Tom and the dog were going to go up there Monday evening--
the last time I was in touch. My land line into the house worked until then.
I suspect that water has taken care of it though. I can't get through. In
another day or so as I see ways to check I'll try to find out something. Also
if there is any realistic view on when I could "get in" to go to the house and
check. As I see it on tv, that could be done now by coming across the main
bridge-- the "Crescent City Connection" from the West Bank and travelling
"uptown" from there. As I see it on tv it could be done-- but it certainly
would not be safe nor be allowed at this point.
As far as my other location, the storage unit in Metairie, I haven't a clue.
It is in a second-story, climate controlled building that may or may not have
survived the wind. If it did then there's a good chance that my unit is
intact. If not-- well, it's insured!
2-- The other address-- my old apartment for many years, 726 Frenchmen Street--
is in the Faubourg Marigny-- an area immediately outside the French Quarter---
at the other end from Canal Street. Next door to that house is the home of my
friend Dr. Kenneth Holditch, the author and Faulkner/TWilliams expert. (He
left town and is in Baton Rouge.) A friend reported that "Kenneth's house is
just fine" -- which means that the seven-story, solidly-built retirement
residence in the same block (on Washington Park) is surely okay as well. My
friend David is probably in there. If not he is probably about seven or so
blocks away at a friend's house in the same area that I also am certain that is
without water.

Now all my friends are very resourceful and I am certain that they will weather
this the best they can. I expect that they and my cat Sister Mary Agnes will be
fine.
It is probably best they stay inside for the moment. There is no use in my
posting anything online since none of them use the internet nor will they even
think of it as a possibility. I should be able to find out some "inside"
things through my media contacts in Jackson.

I am not going to Mississippi to work this weekend-- who can afford the Bush
Gas??!!-- but am planning to go the following weekend for the Tennessee
Williams Tribute in Columbus. I'm being asked to take the above-mentioned
Holditch to it as he is speaking. I was planning to go anyway.

For the moment I am going to stay here in Wichita Falls. It's pretty dry here
and not quite as hot.

I thank God I was not there and am not there now.

Please watch the TV Benefit Concert tonight (if you are in the US) and give
what you can.

Personally I thank all for the wonderful wishes I've received. I send
greetings to Ed and Susan Poole and am glad to know that they are alright. I
hope you folks find your home intact.

Take care and I'll be in touch.
Joe Bonelli
