I saw it a few weeks ago myself. I liked it, but I went it prepared to like it. Polansky and Kingsley approached this project because they felt that all previous treatments of Oliver Twist have been overly "sentimental," which was something they wanted to avoid, first and foremost. I think they accomplished this. Also, the art direction/production design are excellent and evocative.
The film direction and editing are very conventional, especially considering Polansky's demonstrated ability to challenge viewers, but I suppose that suited the story.
