Folks
I have a "partially dissenting" opinion
first of all, I frame lots of stuff for the gallery. Any poster that
looks fine in a frame, presuming it doesnt have any serious defects
like tape, mold etc, does not need to be linenbacked for me
Moreover, I dont have any linenbacked posters in my own collection..
though I have numerous framed pieces. With the exception of 3 sheets
of course, which must be backed for exhibit
Also, one of the things that we found in the comic hobby years ago is
that some de-acidification treatments did not entirely help.
De-acidification is a process that in actuality only slows the
deterioration process.. It doesn't stop it, and we found that when
the shelf life of the de-acidifier ended(the length of time it
continues to work, they don't go on forever.. the process needs to be
re-established periodically), we found that the comic books actually
seemed to deteriorate faster unless the book was treated again. Or in
other words, it seemed to us that it was similar to the Picture of
Dorian Gray.. after the process went it course, the book went down
fast (what we saw was paper browning very quickly)
so while I'm not saying you shouldn't de-acidify, I am saying you
need to watch your product over many years and see how it works at
the end of it's shelf life
