Hi Dave and everyone

You raise a very good point about how Non Collectors want to buy posters. I think there is no doubt that they prefer linen backed posters because they are far easier to display. If you ever go to the Galleries in London or some of the Travel Poster galleries you will see mostly linen backed posters on display. And surely that is the very reason for collecting posters - to actually display them. Many collectors, myself included, end up with most of their collection in boxes or drawers.

I decided some time ago to experiment with displaying linen backed posters in my home without framing them. The idea was to be able to change them around fairly easily. I found that the best way for me to do this was to use magnets. There is a supplier in Australia who sells extremely powerful magnets that are very small and unobtrusive. They can easily hold a three sheet and, I think, make a very impressive display. Another bonus is that I have a curved wall in my entrance and I can display my large French poster of Palace de Luxe on that wall using magnets. I couldnt use a frame on that wall.

I'm not trying to push linen backing as the only way to go but I thought Bruce's comments raised some interesting questions about whether or not to back a poster in great condition.

Regards
John

Subject: [MOPO] In most cases, linen backing will increase the value of a poster.???

This got me thinking.....I've changed the wording on my site to better clarify.

Instead of:

"In most cases, linen backing will increase the value of a poster."

It now says:

"If a rare poster has some unsightly flaws, linen backing and restoring it will most likely increase it's value.

If a rare poster is in EX C8 condition or better with no real major unsightly flaws, linen backing will either have almost no affect on its value or slightly decrease its value. This really depends on how rare the poster is."

An important point:

There are two types of buyers: collectors and non collectors.

I have sold A LOT of posters TO NON COLLECTORS. These are people who want one or two posters for a home theater or a gift or whatever.

At least HALF of my buyers are NON COLLECTORS.

MOST NON COLLECTORS prefer linen backed posters. PERIOD.

Linen backed posters SELL BETTER than non linen backed posters because they appeal to both collectors AND non collectors.
