Good God. That's funny.
I'm the biggest Yma Sumac fan in the world, period.
I first heard her in the basement rec room of my cousin's home
in Edmonton, Alberta in 1962 on the XTABAY album. The album
had been out over 10 years at that time. I thought I
had died and gone to heaven. I bought the album, after I had
saved enough money to purchase it for $3.98 at the Gaylynn
Record Salon in Beaumont, Texas that same summer. I looked
up all her albums in the Schwann Record Catalog and bought them
all over time - SUN VIRGIN, MAMBO, LEGEND OF THE JIVARO and finally
FUEGO DEL ANDE (in stereo), one by one. Later a friend, Doug
Hanners, who runs the world famous Austin Record Convention
gave me a 10 inch Mexican LP on Musart Records, ALMA INCA.
Very scratchy, and I think it was early South American recordings
with Vivanco. I think at one point XTABAY had been continuously
available from Capitol Records (never out of print) longer than
any LP. I have the 45 rpm version of that album and a 10-inch, too,
as well as the CDs. Also some Russian live concert CD, not very
well recorded. Those Capitol albums should be 24-bit remastered
by some really good producer for posterity.
I saw her in San Francisco about 11 or 12 years ago with a kind of
rock ensemble, and while I was happy to see her, the band was
not particularly good with her music --- and she told them about it,
too!
It was in an upstairs theater over some hotel near Union Square, if I
remember correctly.
Channing Thomson got her to sign a program which I have framed in the
hall.
It hangs proudly next to programs for Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.
I have that great lobby card from SECRET OF THE INCAS. Too bad there
wasn't a similar one sheet. I wonder if there was ever a record
company poster
for XTABAY, or any of her Capitol albums. That would be a holy grail
for me.
Fat chance.
I never liked the album she put out on London in the seventies. A
friend
of mine and I tried to look her up in Los Angeles in the seventies,
but only
got as far as her "agent."
Yma Sumac is what every person in show business aspires to be -- or at
least should aspire to be - a certified original. Maybe five out of
a hundred
of the really successful artists in show business are really
originals. You can't
earn it, you just are or are not.
