You know the scene in The Sixth Sense where the kid says, "I see dead people"? I just looked at the 1,929 items in my sixth annual Halloween auction (which coincidentally includes a complete 7 card lobby set from The Sixth Sense, which remains one of my all time favorite movies), and I SEE GREAT BUYS! A huge percentage of the items are far under the prices you would expect to see on dealers' websites.
Of course, it is very likely that many of the items will receive one or more additional bids, but it is also very likely that there will be quite a few items that sell for "bargain" prices, and many more that are absolute "steals" (especially because of the HUGE number of items offered), but you can't get those bargains or steals if you don't bid, so why not look the items over soon, and place some bids? If you place a bunch of reasonable bids and somehow don't get a single one of those items, then you are only out a little bit of your time, but you may well get a few really good deals (or "steals") and how often does that happen to you anymore (given that almost all sellers start items at close to retail or above, or have high hidden reserves so you can't buy an item unless you pay their often unrealistic reserve)? Note that a fair number of the better items in this auction were NOT professionally restored, and some have quite a few condition defects (although some others are in really wonderful condition, like the Creature From the Black Lagoon one-sheet, which is the best example of this poster I have ever seen). But you can easily make any of these posters look great, even those with significant condition defects or lots of amateur restoration, simply by sending it to a top professional restorer (my personal restorer of choice is Studio C, both because of the quality of their work and their professionalism, which removes the "fear factor" one has when sending a poster off for restoration, but there are also several other highly talented restorers who also do great work). I have no doubt that some number of the better posters I am selling that are in lesser condition will have top quality professional restoration, and then end up in another auction, this time described as having "some restoration on the folds and borders". And it is quite possible that one or more of those posters will be bought by someone who did not bid on the one I was offering this week because "they were waiting for a better condition" example! Before you decided to NOT bid on any of the posters I am offering this week due to condition, first think about how the poster will look AFTER top quality restoration, and consider how long it will be before the poster is again offered at the current bid price or how much higher you might have to bid to get that "better condition" example. Remember to beware of last minute "snipers", those who bid at the last second, either by hand or with an automated sniping program. In the past few months the number of last minute and last second bidders in my auctions has steadily and dramatically risen. Six months ago, the total price of my auctions in a single week would rise by an average of 25% over the last 24 hours. Three months ago they would rise by an average of 50% in the same time frame. A month ago it was 100% in the final 24 hours, and recently it has been an average of a 100% rise (the total doubling!) in the final hour alone! What does this mean to you? It means that you can't be complacent just because you have had the high bid on any item for the past few days or hours. You know FOR SURE that there is an excellent chance there will be one or more bids placed in the closing seconds of each auction (maybe the one you most want!), and if they are done with an automated sniping program, then they will come in so close to the end that you will have no chance to re-bid. The only defense against this is to truly bid your top amount on each item, the amount where you won't think "I should have bid higher" if you get outbid, but where you WON'T think, "Why did I bid so much?" if you end up paying close to your maximum. Of course this is easier said then done, but you have to give it your best shot. I personally have nothing against snipe bids, and if they make you feel more comfortable that you are not being artificially "run up" some way, then great (although I assure you that this never happens in my auctions whether you place your bids early or late). But every week I get one or two anguished e-mails from people whose snipe bids failed or who forgot about the ending times, and this week this is even more likely to happen, given the huge number of items, most of which close just seconds apart, and also given that the items close two days after the change of "daylight savings time" which may confuse some of you). If trying to time your bid for the very end causes you to miss any item, then I can't do anything to help you!
