I never could understand sending anything valuable via Parcel Post anyway -- much too dangerous. I know, I know, some people will say "I've been using Parcel Post for years and never had a problem..." but I used to work for the Post Office and I *know* how Parcel Post is handled, and it ain't good.

But even with the surcharge, the gap between the two services will widen again shortly, because with the doubling of the cost of fuel, Priority Mail rates will be spiking way up very shortly -- along with everything else. Thank you to Big Oil (continuing to make their highest profits in history over the last year) and their friends in the White House for not even saying "boo" to their blatant, illegal, monopolistic price-gouging.

Subject: [MOPO] Take Me To The Cleaners

I've noticed the USPS now have a "Non Machinable"
Surcharge for shipping items via Parcel Post.

It looks like they really want to force people to use
Priority Mail instead of paying for a former less
expensive shipping option.

I like item #7 for all the people who recycle used
cartons and wrap them in brown kraft paper for
shipping.

The surcharge applies to:

(1) a can, roll, or tube.
(2) a package less than 6 inches long or 1/4 inch
thick or 3 inches wide.
(3) more than 34 inches long or 17 inches high or 17
inches wide.
books and other printed materials weighing over 25
pounds.
(4) a package with more than 24 ounces of liquid in
one or more glass containers.
(5) a package with 1 gallon or more of liquid in metal
or plastic containers.
(6) a metal-strapped or metal-banded box.
(7) an insecurely wrapped, unwrapped, paper-wrapped,
or sleeve-wrapped article.
(8) a metal or wood box.
