Hello Walter and all,
You bring up a very good point. I was at Louis' place many times and we talked about the fading. Many of his posters were hung in the entry room, which was huge and had a two story wall of nothing but glass which faced the setting sun over the ocean. It wasn't that he was so frugal with his framing jobs, it's just that he had a guy that would come to his place, pick up the posters, frame them and bring them back who happened to be economically priced. While my frames all come with the genuine UV filtered plexiglass and were less costly than his framer, and Louis wanted me to do his framing, the fact that his guy would pickup and deliver was more important to him. He did inquire with his framer about the UV plexiglass but the cost was so prohibitive, he did opt to use just plain acrylic and keep the pickup and delivery service.  Louis lived about 45 minutes from me. He was so busy with school that driving to me was not an option and I did not have time to deliver.
I, too, plan to go to the auction and I have a few items I am interested in. Walter's point is very well taken and if you are not attending the preview and auction, I would definitely have someone you know check out the posters condition in advance.

Subject: [MOPO] bonhams Leithold poster auction

I am planning on bidding on a number of pieces in this sale, but you should all take note of two things:
---About 80% of the posters are framed.  You will have to factor in the costs of shipping framed posters, if you are not from southern California.
---A good many of the posters have significant color fading.  Louis Leithold, who was a very rich man but an extremely frugal one, refused to pay the extra charge for UV plexiglass when he had these pieces framed, and, as a result, a lot of the posters have been damaged by the California sun.

Having said all this, there are obviously some fine pieces in the sale which have no condition problems, but LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!
