Also factor in that they might also damage the piece in removing it from
the frame, too. At least if it's framed then they have to be responsible
for it arriving to you in the same condition.

A few years ago one of my US based customers won a folded quad
(unframed) from Christies or Sothebys' here (can't recall which house)
and they quoted US$200 for shipping from Australia to US, and he asked
if I could pick ity up for him and handle the shipping. Happy to help.
Went and picked up the poster. It was flattened on a piece of very old
cardboard in a very tatty plastic bag (presumably how it was displayed
at the auction). I took it out of the bag, folded it to the original 50
year old quad folds, packed it like a brick and shipped it fully insured
to him for US$20.00

Rich is right. Just remember for next time. But I would be really nevous
about letting the backroom thugs take a poster out of a frame. Been in
too many auction house back rooms, seen too much.
