Wow – this is a first, an actual reply by Jack to a post.

If you understand that classics will sell for more, I’m not certain that I understand your complaint.

Are you trying to say that ALL movie paper has some sort of inherent value or that you are upset that more perfect access to information has made it so prices on Return of Durango Kid posters have fallen to a more realistic price level faster than you had hoped?

There’s still no rule that states anything old must be valuable.  There are a great many things that were once popular and no longer are – well before eBay even came around.  Roy Rogers and Gene Autry sales are disappearing either due to attrition or collectors finishing collections or both?

Ok, fine – that I understand.  But certainly it is to be expected.  People collect things that they are nostalgic for, not things you might be nostalgic about.

(And yes, historically important/classic cinema. It is a side point, but interesting to note that while you have no desire to part with classic paper, thus helping it escalate in price by keeping it from the marketplace, you lament that prices are dropping on the dregs you and other sellers dump in the market).

I’ve done three Courts shows this year and have been VERY pleased with sales at each.  I know you didn’t get my opinion on sales there and will assume that you probably talked to other dealers that sell material similar to yours.  If so, I am certain they backed up your opinion.  But the fact is I still see a growing hobby.  I am seeing new collectors in the marketplace, they might not collect what you or I do or make their purchases the same way, but they are there.  Sales results from dealers and auction houses bare this out.

Do I wish more people attended shows?  Of course I do, and that would be true no matter what the numbers were.  I have a great time talking with fellow collectors and seeing posters in person instead of on a computer screen.  I don’t care if they know who Charlie Chan is or not. Just the fact that they are interested in posters is enough for me.

Subject: [MOPO] mopo/ebay killed the poster show star>>> a retort

Sean Linkenback mentioned to me that the quality and etc and my bitcching lamenting the drop in the shows attendance and sales by dealer was becoming repetative.

Well , of course the classics will sell in the higher range, and obviously I could put my Outlaw, my large hand painted "Misfits" Italian, Niagra, Treasure of sierra Madre on ebay but I won't. My point is and was, that these 50's and 60's "b"'s 1/2 sheets, inserts, one sheets well, they were selling even in the 25 to 50 dollar range. And the Durango Kid that he fluffed of in one sentence, well, it was the second in the series the "Return of" and would at one time have brought at leat 200 or more at auction. But those Western buyer, the Roy rogers guys, the Gene autry guys, well thery're disappearing slowly and sadly and newer folks yournger folks are coming in and the big interest in and the wider intere! st in the artwork, the pieces to hand up on the wall, in restaurants etc. they're gone as well.

So keep watching and you'll see the shows are not going to be bringing in the "big huge crowds they once did!" Ray Courts! He wasa the King and he had and has the best of the best. But the dealers there just don't have the sales. How do I know? I personally spoke to many of them at the Burbank show. Lots of disappointments. So don't blame my bitching, blame the demographics dude and thats whats happening. More folks don't even know who charlie Chan is anymore and thats a fact.

thanks
