I thought the build-up to the Skull Island arrival was great with its
b/g on various characters, the detail of the Venture's dubious past, and
it made the fantastical adventuress and action scenes on the island all
the more impressive because of what had been invested in the characters.
One hesitates to say too much because the treats in store in this film
really are best left as a surprise to first-time viewers. But it
delivers in spades at every level.
I suspect some "purists" are so busy being pissed off that Kong has more
real depth of character than Obie's creation (heresy, probably) that
they can't realise that the film really is the beauty and the beast
story in a way the 1933 version wasn't.
I saw it at a 10 am screening in a very sleepy part of Sydney on a
Saturday morning where the denizens of that particular skull island
don't raise until after 2pm on weeekends and sat in a state-of-the-art
theate with two other people.
Had I not had an appointment straight after, I would have turned around
and gone back in to see it again immediately.
One may not like the film, but to knock Jackson's expertise as a
director and one who undertsands both the mythological aspects of the
story and how to pump old-fashioned movie values back to where they
might bring more pople back to the movies is simply being churlish and
elitist.... or maybe just jealous that Peter got to make a dream come true.

Well, I loved it.
I am a huge fan of the original. I always cried like a baby and told
my friends it was a love story, not a monster movie. They thought I
was crazy. Peter Jackson’s version pays such obvious and loving homage
to the original that I appreciate it even more. He truly must love the
original and it shows in his film.
I don’t agree with the critics complaining that the first 30 minutes
are too slow, but I do believe the film would be better 30-45 minutes
shorter. Just shortening some of the action scenes a little an
tightening the film overall would make it “perfect”, IMHO. I think it
would also increase the box office because frankly, it is such an
exhausting ride for 3 hours that I think it hurting the multiple viewings.
All in all, I love it.

*Subject:* [MOPO] KONG redux
OK, after a year of waiting, I saw Peter Jackson's version of KING
KONG the other night... 3 hours never went by so fast. I have mixed
reactions, but it is *definitely* something that must be seen on the
big screen with the big surround-sound systems. I'll hold off on a
full review for another week to give y'all a chance to check it out.
