David,

I believe what you have there is one of the very first video-release movie posters. DEEP THROAT was one of the first films ever to be released on the then-new format of video tape. It would have been in 1977 or 1978 -- so the poster looking almost 30 years old is about right. In those days, buying a video tape of real movie cost a lot of money... anywhere from $100 to $150 each, if you can believe it. One of the first places that video tape sales were big was -- strange, but true -- in the Adult bookstores. It made sense in a way, most people weren't prepared to pop for $100 bucks to see THE SOUND OF MUSIC in the privacy of their own home, but to do so for a hot porno flick you could view in privacy, over and over again, well, now,  that was different...

So, anyway, video tape sales were a very big part of the Adult bookstore business in the late '70s and early '80s. For the first few years, because the tapes were so expensive, they did not do rentals. You wanted it, you had to buy it. Then, as non-adult rental stores starting opening up -- and they didn't carry XXX-rated titles at first -- the adult stores bookstores also started renting tapes. And, just like today, the distributors issued posters to be displayed in the stores. Like today, they tended to be a bit smaller than the theatrical release posters and often left off some or all of the detailed cast-and-credits info from the bottom, as this one does.

That's my best guess.

Subject: [MOPO] question about DEEP THROAT one sheet

I just got in a Deep Throat one sheet that measures 25"x38"

This is the one I'm familiar with that is 28"x 42"

Does anyone have any info. they would like to share about the 25x38 one? I'm just trying to make sure it is from the original release and not a later release. It does look and feel vintage like a 30 year old poster should, and the guy I got it from is reputable. It came from the Unicorn Cinema in San Diego.

Thanks in advance for your responses.
