JR et al:

I saw King Kong a week or so ago at a screening and I had
a terrific time. Is it the original '33 King Kong? No. Is it
worse? No. Is it better? No. It's different. And it's the
same.

Peter Jackson clearly was doing not just a remake but,
quite literally, an homage to the original, which he revers.
The film is much longer and much of the added material is
really good. It's no longer a simple adventure story. There's
a lot more character development, a lot more emotionality
to the story. It really works to make the story more moving.
And it makes it work for today's audiences -- including
adults -- for whom the original film wouldn't work on a first
viewing anymore. The world has gone past the acting style
and special effects of that time. The '33 King Kong is
wonderful, don't get me wrong, but it's of its time.

The '05 King Kong is far from perfect. I'd have cut a lot of
the action material on Skull Island. (As with JR, I'll hold off
mentioning specifics for those of you who haven't seen it yet.
But what's there is pretty exciting and amazing.

There are a few things that took me out of the picture.
Matters of physics during the New York sequences that were
clearly brought on by either lack of thought or a desire to
keep it in because it looked cool even if it wasn't possible.

But I liked the movie a lot. It's a great adventure still and with
a lot of heart, a lot of emotion, and a lot of energy.

Craig.

realized he could not -- and should not -- try to "duplicate" the original,
but rather that he should give it his own interpretation (while still
holding true to the plot and character basics, as if the original were a
book that he was making a movie out of). How successful he was in this is
something everyone will have to decide for themselves. But listen, go into
it with an open mind about Namoi Watts. Give the kid a break... I think
you'll be pleasantly surprised.

know from the previews, it will not come close to the original. I admire
Jackson's enthusiasm & life long obsession with the movie, but the original
will never be duplicated and WATTS her name is no Fay Wray. Watch for the
upcoming computer generated remake of the WIZARD OF OZ, starring Robert
Deniro, Christopher Walken, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Queen Latifa and
Jessica Simpson as Dorothy
