| The epilogue at the end of CAPOTE, while technically correct, is at least a little misleading, I think. While it serves beautifully the arc of Bennett Miller's film, it leaves an impression that Capote withered away after Perry Smith's execution. Not so. While he did not write another NOVEL, he wrote and published many things, threw his famous Black and White ball in NYC (Bennett Miller should make a film about THAT) and made many appearances as a gossip and human wrecking ball. Maybe he just didn't have another novel in him. That happens.
I loved the movie, and I loved Hoffman's performance. The question remains whether a film which is about someone who is gay, even if the film depicts gay love, romance or sex, is a gay film. Or indeed whether a film is "gay" simply because it reflects a gay sensibility.

Capote, in my opinion, was much more of a gay film then you describe. Capote is most definitely infatuated with a murderer! That is the love story that I saw in Capote. But Capote's self importance combined with his insecurities and weakness to succumb to the demands of his publisher, and probably a lucid moment, allowed him to end his love affair that would never grow. Capote never wrote another novel. I honestly believe that when murderer Perry Smith was put to death, a part of Capote died. He dug his grave with alcohol and drugs. Gee, MONSTER won Charlize Theron an academy award. Christina Ricci has a "gay" love affair with a cold blooded murderess. Capote in a way tells a similar love story. Both Theron's and Hoffman's performances were equally well crafted. Any bets on Hoffman winning best actor or is that just too repetitive?
