I saw Miss Winters in person one time. I was fortunate to have been
invited to attend the Oscars the year that Titanic won for best
picture. Most of you probably remember that the highlights of that
ceremony included James Cameron's "top of the world" speech, Celine
Dion singing that interminable song, and all of the past winners in the
acting categories appeared on stage for a group photo. I saw several
of the celebrities up close and personal -- the moment I'll never
forget was Shelley Winters waiting for her car at the valet parking
stand. Someone screamed out to her "Shelley, look up, we want to take
a picture." In her Brooklynese accent she grumbled "I'm tired" and she
really did just seem to be tired and old. It was kind of a sad moment
but also spoke to the fact that she was always honest and wore her real
feelings and thoughts on her sleeve. I hope she gets that long rest
now after a life very well lived.
