Andre,
I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone who's had some long-term
experience using these vinyl poster pockets. In the past there has been debate
over which type of plastic might harm posters over time, without any definitive
answer as far as I could tell. I know from using smaller versions of these that
sometimes, under the right circumstances, the thing you have in the pocket can
stick to the vinyl, causing real problems. But that may be because of something
on the surface of the item, like the glossy coating on photographs and some
prints, I don't know. It also may have happened because moisture got into the
pocket with the item.
At the very least, if one used these, I would think that the open top
should be sealed with clear magic tape, to prevent moisture in the air from
wicking into the pocket. The price is attractive, $23 each plus shipping. But
they are certainly not "archival", but maybe would be alright for some
items.
In the past I would have suggested the inert mylar bags (which nothing will
stick to) and the use of a non-acidic backing board to keep the poster rigid in
the bag. But those materials have now become so expensive that they cost almost
as much as these rigid vinyl pockets. Obviously, the true, sturdy,
archival-quality frames with UV-protective Plexiglas like those Sue
Heim sells would still be the best way to display posters on the wall --
but those of us with a lot of posters do need another, lower cost way, to
protect our posters and bags without rigid backing are less than ideal unless
you have one of those big, expensive poster storage cabinets.
