I am bringing up a similar experience brought up by Alan. With all the Academy Awards publicity, Brokeback Mountain posters, signed paraphernalia, photos and bootleg DVDs are going for mega bucks. There are single and double sided one sheets up for auction which claim to have original signatures by 11, 12 and higher cast members, directors, producers, musicians and costumer designers. It's phenominal how some are going for figures in the $1,500 range and higher. Almost all are private and after being one of the losing bidders I am almost always contacted by the seller with a "second chance" offer at my high bid which is usually in the $200 range. On two occasions I was sent a notice by Ebay not to bid or pay for the item and then find out it was removed from the auction block. Curiosity got the better of me and I did a "buy it now" on one of these offers. Worst scenario is that I get a fake poster and am!
out
the $300. Or even get nothing and have to deal with PayPal to get my money back. Best scenario is I get a one sheet signed by all the members of the production. I'll let this group know and we'll have a good learning experience. In the meantime, check it out for yourselves. Do an ebay search of Brokeback Mountain signed posters and see how many are private and/or have outrageous high bids. Try to stick to just posters or else you'll get hundreds of items including signed cowboy boots, playing cards, photos, CDs and ticket stubs.
Alan, what happened to you is common. Try again with a lower maximum bid and see if you are once again contacted. Worst that can happen is you don't get the item.
Steve
