Hello everybody,
I am hoping that we are wrong on our assessment of movie poster
collecting with future generations. I keep remembering what was going on in
this area of the movie business during it's infancy and probably in to the
1950s. Posters were meant to advertise the product, shipped along with the
35mm prints in many cases from town to town. The were printed to be
expendable!!! Very few were refolded correctly or repaired meticulously. It
was paper. The real value was in the film prints. WE ARE the ones who
decided to preserve what was left many years after the initial printing.
Just as our discussion is focused now, I am sure the theater owners in the
early years did not expect us to collect this stuff they use to tack and
paste to walls. But, we do because we recognize their nostalgic appeal and
their artistic quality. We can thank most of the film collectors from the
past, both 16mm and 35mm, for salvaging most of what we have in our
collections. They were there at the right time and place to save all this
material from being destroyed. Let's hope future generations will look upon
us in the same way, as rescuers of Americana in the form of movie posters.
