Tom:

If you do decide to donate the statue to the Academy -- and
I think that's a fine solution -- you can get a tax credit. You
should speak to a competent accountant and figure out a)
the appropriate value (as with posters, divined from the
prices gotten by sellers and announced values from other
"gifts") and b) how to spread the benefit over several years,
as the value is likely to be very high, probably more than you
can take in a single year.

If Rudi is unable to help you with the physical aspects of the
donation, I'll be happy to. I'm not a member of AMPAS
(though years later the folks at Disney told me they'd have
gotten me a membership if they knew I wanted one) but I
am a member of ATAS (the television academy) and live
just a few blocks from AMPAS and am over their fairly often.

You might also see about making some conditions to your
gift, such as the Academy determining who the recipient
was and letting you know (since a "good" recipient can
increase the value of your gift and the tax credit derived
therefrom).

They can determine authenticity by comparison to samples
they might already have from the various possible years,
marks they're aware of that might not be obvious, etc. And
who was the recipient might be determined by those
methods as well as seeing what trophies are otherwise
accounted for.

Craig.
