Roland, your story is wonderful. Did your girlfriend keep the sketch
or sell it?
A few years ago, my husband and I went to an auction in Massachusetts
and won an oil painting of a rascally looking fellow with a pipe and a
tankard that caught our eyes. Later - during the long ride back home -
we saw an "FH" in the corner. (Frans Hals!) His Malle Babbe van
Haerlem painting of a rascally looking woman with a tankard and an owl
(no pipe) had elements of our painting.
My husband photographed it from every possible angle and then we called
Christie's to make an appointment. We actually hauled the! painting in
on the subway. Can't believe now that we did that! The woman we saw
was ultra haughty and told us that she thought it to be seventeenth
century Italian.
A few days later, I called Harvard University in a wild attempt to
speak to Seymour Slive, who's considered the foremost Hals authority.
He actually talked to me and we spent a very long time on the phone
discussing the painting. Well, he invited us to bring it to him so
that he could see it. I'm kicking myself now but we never did it for
whatever reason. Now we just might take him up on it one day. In the
meantime, the rascal hangs on our parlor wall keeping his own secrets.
