I responded to Movielegends privately, thusly:

It would be interesting to run this down and see who was quoting or paraphrasing who -- or if it was independent
invention of "culture."
K.

I've seen IT'S A GIFT several times, one of the world's funniest movies, but this eluded me.  The poster one cannot find
easily, and would sell for thousands.  It was not Field's favorite of his films, though.  That honor belongs to YOU'RE TELLING ME.

Thanks,
Kirby

Kirby,
That quote is from the end of "It's a Gift" when Fields is negotiating the sale price of his "orange ranch" to racetrack owners who need his worthless land to build a grandstand. Fields names a rather ludicrous price, and the prospective buyer cries "YOU"RE DRUNK!" To that Fields says "I may be drunk but you're crazy and tomorrow I'll be sober and you'll be crazy for the rest of your life." Of course Fields gets his price and goes onto live happily ever after sharing screwdrivers with his dog.

Subject: I may be drunk or I may not

Regarding the quote attributed to W.C. Fields, I have never heard
this. I never heard
any story in which W.C. Fields lionized the idea that he would be
SOBER ever.

There is a quite famous quote of Winston Churchill:

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will
still be ugly.

If W.C. Fields ever said this, I'd be interested to know where and
when he said it.
