Phil and Clinton, This is why I object when sellers and collectors refer to re-releases as "reissues". I have always called them "re-releases" as they are posters printed for use in theaters during the re-release of a film. Yes...I know that in Australia and other places they use the term "reissue" instead of re-release. That's what is muddying the waters. We have two terms for the same thing -- and to make things worse, people often mistakenly say "reissue" to mean a REPRINT (i.e., a fake, which I think what happened here with Clinton's article).
I would submit that since we use the U.S. terminology for the other facets of describing U.S. movie posters that we should do the same with re-releases and call them re-releases and retire the term "reissue". I would be so brazen as to suggest that those in other countries join in and abandon the term "reissue" in favor of the more descriptive "re-release". That is the term that most often appears printed on the poster itself, after all. For example, on the RealArt paper it clearly says "A RealArt Re-Release". For another reason, "reissue" just sounds wrong to my ear... it sounds like a reissue is an exact reprinting of something at a later date, more like what they call a "second printing" in the book world, but we don't recognize second printings in movie poster collecting, only -- "original 1939 release" or "1954 re-release" (reissue) or "reprint (fake)". It would eliminate future confusion if we could agree on a single term to refer to an original movie poster that was printed in conjunction with the re-release of a film. Not that it will ever happen... any more than this hobby/industry will ever agree on anything like a common grading system. But I can dream, can't I? Here are some articles on the subject of reprints and fakes, that Clinton should check out if he hasn't already. First, there is Dave Lieberman's comprehensive and hard-hitting article (something I feel *everyone* should read and go back and re-read regularly): http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/cinearticles.htm#fakes/reprints There are also general information articles on this topic at: http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/NewSite/INDEX/ARTICLES/reprints.as p http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/NewSite/INDEX/ARTICLES/commercial. asp and this one on the whole re-release / reissue deal: http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/NewSite/INDEX/ARTICLES/reissue.asp -- JR ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Edwards Cinema Arts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 21:22 Subject: Re: [MOPO] Poster fakes help > It's always useful for people to be able to read opinions about this > subject. > However, with all due respect, I think a statement like this: > > "A re-issue is not collectible do not waste time or money." > > Placed in the body of the text is both incorrect and misleading. > > There is a real history to re-issues from studios being collectible and > valuable.
