The fact is that an authenticator can only make an educated guess at whether
an autograph is genuine or not. They should not be certifying that an
autograph is absolutely positively authentic unless they actually saw it
being signed. The best they should be able to do is to say something like
"In my opinion, the signature on the attached document/photo appears to be
authentic". They should add a disclaimer that this is an opinion only. There
are so many fakes out there that I personally wouldnt bother with anything
that I wasnt 100% certain was signed by the celebrity.

this is a problem issue..
I have a stack of real quality stuff, that comes from different sources -
including original owners.. It all looks right from known examples of the
star's handwriting... But the guy whose book I use for authentication
claims them to be fake in some cases, while another very well known dealer
of autographs for many years says they look right. Who do I believe?
the only thing to do is get them authenticated - for a cost -
however, there was a scandal recently where a number of phony items that
had been authenticated as real by one of the main authenticators.
what do you do?
when you find out the answer to that question.. please let me know.. I
have either a stack worth 100K.. or nothing
