This auction is for an 11x14-inch lobby card promoting mexican screenings of the original version of "King Kong." Featuring early rko-poster art, this card is probably for the original release or for the 1938 or 1942 major studio re-release. (obviously, astute collectors in ebay-land may know, though! we welcome any hard facts, as this auction goes on for 10 days to give everyone a fair look at the poster.) As can be seen in the accompanying detailed photos and blowup, the years have aged the paper. Also, this lobby card was obviously used repeatedly in theaters to promote actual exhibitions of this classic film! The distributor reinforced the card on the back, with paper tape and just kept sending it out to the theaters. Again, lease the accompanying digital photos of this item. As seen often in the pages of "Famous Monsters of Filmland," the original RKO Radio Pictures version of "King Kong" debuted at Graumann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood in March 1933. RKO co-owner David O. Selznick ("Gone With the Wind") bankrolled nearly two exhaustive, unprecedented years of "Kong" production, and the film became the first real blockbuster of the Sound Era, rocketing RKO from minor-studio status to that of one of the country's most-creative and best-funded. Effects pioneer and maestro Willis O'Brien ("The Lost World," "KK," "Son of Kong," "It's a Mad, Mad Mad Mad World") helmed the stop-motion animation team that brought the giant gorilla to life. Thanks to "O'Bie's" stop-motion wizardry and guidance, "Kong" was the penultimate technical achievement of its time! Merian C. Cooper's role in conceiving the original story came in a time when Frank Buck's silent adventure travelogues were popular in the nation's theaters, and it was Director Cooper's "pipe dream" -- using the technical combination of O'Bie's talents and the breakthrough of SOUND films! -- to make an exciting, yet thought-provoking adventure film. THOUGH THIS LOBBYCARD IS FOR THE MEXICAN FILM EXHIBITIONS, IT WOULD BE A COLLECTOR'S PRIZE FOR ANY FAN OF FAMOUS MONSTERS OR THE ORIGINAL RKO VERSION OF "KING KONG"!
