I've known who Winchell was since I was a little kid watching THE
UNTOUCHABLES on TV in Australia when it first screened.
Knowing who Winchell was, his connections with Hoover, later informed
considerable interest in the HUAC period of American history.
Not sure I'd place him alongside Murrow other than in fame at the time,
I suspect they worked from a completely different set of basic
journalistic principles. Parsons, probably, but not Murrow.
And for the record, I'll be 56 in September.
Interesting, many years ago when THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT was doing
the rounds as a project, it was shelved for some time because studio
research showed that the "target audience" of 15 year olds could not
relate to WW2 at all... and most of them had no idea what or when it was.
Ignorance of history is one of the major reasons the world is still a
pile of political and humanitarian doo-doo. But not let's start on that.

I am under the age of 50 and I know who he was very well..
world class reporter who also helped J Edgar Hoover compile
information so tyhat he could get the scoops.
during his heyday, he was on a level with Louella Parsons as a gossip
columnist & he was on an equal footing with Edward R Murrow as a
journalist
he was shamefully pushed aside by younger journalists who did not know
his history even though they worked alongside him
by the way.... I'm 49 & 4 months

Hi, Scott, Michael, et. al., from Joe B.
In the 1940s and early 1950s the most famous "name" in "journalism"
(of a sort) was Walter Winchell. I defiy you to find ANYone in this
country under the age of 50 who know who he was or what his
significance is in "journalistic" history!

I wasn't alive in 1941 but I know about Pearl Harbor, the War in
Europe--and
that "Citizen Kane," "The Maltese Falcon," "Hold That Ghost,
"Suspicion,"
"Sergeant York," "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" and "Babes on Broadway" were
released that year. (Those are black and white movies for those of
you who
don't recognize the titles). Even when I was 20 years old, I was
aware of
what came before me.
It's disheartening to think that someone who was so incredibly famous
at one
point in time can be completely unknown in just a generation. To quote
George C. Scott, quoting General George S. Patton: "all glory is
fleeting."
So is fame, sadly.
Maybe some of these "youngsters" need to play a little more Trivial
Pursuit--or pay attention in history class.
Sorry for the rant, but this is a topic that just drives me up a wall. I
guess, I'm "getting old" as Michael B put it. :)
My 2 cents!
