Winchell was more a columnist than a journalist. Today, he would have been on Fox. Ultra conservative, extremely powerful and influential in his heyday, he was also a friend of Damon Runyon. Closer in type to Drew Pearson than Murrow; Murrow was in a whole other league as a serious journalist.
If I'm not off topic yet, J.J. Hunsecker in Sweet Smell of Success was based on Winchell, or did I say that already?
