Hello Gordon...
After numerous attempts, I have found that this system works for me.
Set the slide up so it is standing vertically. I've cut a board with a
groove, into which the slide can be inserted to hold it in place. The
board is painted black, so it will not show in the photo. A piece of
black mat board is cut with an opening that frames the slide and keeps
any light from coming through around it.
Approximately two feet behind the upright slide, place a white card
which is lit from above with a photoflood lamp.
The light reflected from the white card then shines through the slide
from the rear, like a stained glass window.
In front of the slide place your camera on a tripod. Take your
exposure from the front of the slide. You may want to bracket
exposures (one lighter than suggested - one as suggested - one darker)
for each piece until you get it just right. Make note of your
exposures, so when you see the prints you can determine the best one.
The biggest mistake people make is to light the slide from the front.
I'll be glad to email you some images, if you'd like.
Good luck!
Mike
