I've been looking around for some Star Wars posters lately - a style
A, because mine, although on linen, was still originally folded, and
the lines are still there. Granted a rolled one will probably be
expensive, but hey, I might get lucky. Also been looking for the
style D, cause it's so damn cool looking.
Well, I came across an auction on eBay, from the seller rokmodataol,
which has a link to "The Professor's" website
(http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/mymovieposters/index.html).
I'm sure that anyone who has been around a while in the poster
community is aware of this complete fake. Created specifically to
debunk Dan and his site (www.movieposterauthentication.com) for his
incredible contribution to the collecting community (THANK YOU DAN!),
The Professor is simply a young guy with a fake beard and pipe (in
almost every shot) who claims to be a "specialist" in movie poster
authentication.
Among his amazing credentials: He worked for the National Screen
Service from '65-'88, has a Master's and PhD in "printing and
publishing", and has posters in his collection going back to 1910. He
should be very prominent on this forum, as he has also carbon dated
his posters for accurate authentication (WOW!), and is obviously has a
vast wealth of information that the poster community desperately
needs! Yeah, right.
OK, back to the Star Wars poster - according to the Prof, the poster
was reprinted in 1977, because of the huge popularity of the film. He
claims, and I'm not making this up, that he "actually oversaw this
print run at NSS and gave it the old thumbs up even though he had
noticed some minor flaws on the trial print run . The hair was one of
the flaws. Unfortunately it was too late to correct as we had a
deadline to keep and we were already far behind."
Unfortunately in today's society, this guy can keep his website up and
has the potential for duping some people into buying the reprints that
he and his friends sell (rokmodataol has a style C up now that is all
blue, no other colors on it - oh, it was a printing flaw, but still
authentic!). The Prof made a smart move and moved to Angelfire
hosting, as his old site (along with his co-conspirators) gave their
names and addresses (all on the East coast) to anyone who knows how to
do a domain registration lookup.
The problem with these dealers is that they do sell the occasional
original, authentic posters to give the illusion that everything else
they sell is authentic too.
So I guess the only thing we can do is continue to educate and make
sure the damage The Prof and his friends do is limited. I know it's
probably been a while since you'ev heard about this guy, but there are
probably still people on the forum that have never heard of him, so
now you have been forewarned!
Don't try emailing him, it will simply be ignored.
