I'm not in favor of this, even as a threat.
** I think the simplest enforcement tool is to suspend an offender who takes
a private e-mail and makes it public. Harassment won't stop, and maybe you
shouldn't between members if it was always intended to stay behind the
curtain. Public harassment that starts and continues in public should be
left alone because it's actually funny to see these battles, so long as both
parties do so knowingly and are staying within the broad topic guidelines,
e.g., movies, posters, entertainers and their behavior, box office, etc.,
w/the occasional courtesy of still allowing "off topic" postings which are
clearly noted in the subject line of our more conscientious members.
** You own the list, these are your rules and if people don't like 'em, get
out. You are not yet a blog site where almost everything goes, where all
things are public with a moderator put into the position of censoring stuff.

** It's true that the sender of a private e-mail is at the mercy of the
recipient to honor the sender's request to keep it private. However, you
can control the use of MoPo as the venue. This is NOT censoring. Simply
suspend the member who breaches your rules, REGARDLESS OF CONTENT.
** Hence you are not discriminating or censoring based on subjective
offensiveness of content. You are enforcing rules associated with public v.
private postings and their relationship to the entire MoPo list. If people
want to fight in public, let 'em. But if they start posting private fights
to the list, take action. The only exceptions to public fights if people
start calling each other molestors or riddle ALL of their posts with graphic
NC-17 sexual insults or threats of violence.

** We're all impacted by the news of the day and can be stifling if we can't
talk about other stuff. Generally what we were taught that should be
avoided still holds -- sex, politics and religion -- keep 'em away from the
dinner table UNLESS there is a logical bridge to the entertainment industry
as in the Mel's anti-semitic incident or "Fahrenheit 911," Gore's
"Inconvenient Truth" or Gibson's "The Passion." Crap about Rupert Murdoch I
can do without unless he's directly meddling with a film.

** Many times I've been tempted to quit the list forever, esp. when it gets
political -- but I stay because I'm comforted by the self-policing of the
list by members who jump in to pillory those who have more time on their
hands to continually dish out rudeness. Yeah, the non-stop contrarians are
tiresome, but I can always hit the delete key. Without these contrarians,
the list would be dull.
** Pluto is off-topic and amusing, but the fun is cleaving the discussion to
talk about Disney's Pluto and reaching far to find a technical "workaround"
to keep things moving and funny. When people start fighting about Pluto the
celestial body, a saturation point is quickly reached and so long as insults
aren't traded which people feel compelled to have "the last word," the
subject will "flame out" on its own. I subscribe to no other lists -- when
I blog political, I go elsewhere.
