One of my favorite Glenn Ford films, other than Gilda, is The Courtship of
Eddie's Father. Every time I'm crusing channels and I see that film, I have to
stop there and watch the rest of it. Who knows what the rhyme or reason of the
Academy ever is, but there are definite omissions. Maureen O'Hara definitely and
Doris Day, of course. Doris Day is one of my favs and look at money her films
made the studios in the late 50's and 60's. Who knows?

Subject: [MOPO] Glenn Ford Dies at 90 -
Why no Lifetime Oscar?
Beyond the news that passed 10 min. ago below on the AP wire,
the thing that bothers me is dudring the the last 10 years, Mr. Ford's
family tried, without success, to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
& Sciences to submit Glenn Ford's name for consideration for a
lifetime achievement award. Unlike other actors who never won
Oscars who HAVE received the honor (e.g., such as Myrna Loy and Deborah
Kerr), Ford went to his grave during the last five years thinking
"everyone has forgotten about me."
I was involved briefly in the
unsuccessful Ford campaign and there are other actors/actresses worthy of
consideration who are still living who, for the life of me, I don't
understand why they've been "shut-out." I don't even know how the
process works today other than superficial politics. Ford worked in
seven decades of film history, his last most memorable appearance being in
"Superman" in 1978. They gave screen writer Ernest Lehman his
Lifetime Achievement recently, and he was dead within a year. The
two names that come most immediately to mind that are glaring by their
omission are Maureen O'Hara and Doris
Day.

PRESS Actor Glenn Ford Dies at 90 Aug 30, 10:54 PM (ET)
BEVERLY
HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Actor Glenn Ford, who played strong, thoughtful
protagonists in films such as "The Blackboard Jungle,""Gilda" and "The Big
Heat," died Wednesday, police said. He was 90.
Paramedics called to
Ford's home just before 4 p.m. found Ford dead, police Sgt. Terry Nutall
said, reading a prepared statement. "They do not suspect foul play," he
said.
Ford suffered a series of strokes in the 1990s.
Failing
health forced him to skip a 90th birthday tribute on May 1 at Hollywood's
historic Grauman's Egyptian Theatre. But he did send greetings via
videotape, adding, "I wish I were up and around, but I'm doing the best
that I can.... There's so much I have to be grateful for."
At the
event, Shirley Jones, who co-starred with him in the comedy "The Courtship
of Eddie's Father," called Ford "one of the cornerstones of our industry,
and there aren't many left."
Ford appeared in scores of films during
his 53-year Hollywood career. The Film Encyclopedia, a reference book,
lists 85 films from 1939 to 1991.
He was cast usually as the handsome
tough, but his acting talents ranged from romance to comedy. His more
famous credits include "Superman,""Gilda,""The Sheepman,""The
Gazebo,""Pocketful of Miracles" and "Don't Go Near the
Water."
