Cindy - I am a producer and also tried the Hollywood thing after college. I
am now a corporate producer in PA. As everyone knows, it is a "who you
know" business. Have her look up the Orange County Chapter of the Media
Communications Association. (www.mca-i.org) This is a group of working
professionals that meet on a regular basis. She should join the
organization - cost for a student is less than a text book, go to meetings
and start networking. This will lead to some freelance opportunities.
Please tell her to be patient and expect to be in for the long haul. It
will not happen overnight!

Good luck!

Subject: [MOPO] Off Topic- request for info in terms of getting into
producing.

My 25 year old daughter is planning to move to L.A. in May. She's saving up
for a newer car, deposits and about 3 months worth of rent, living expenses,
etc.

She'd like to become a producer. She also plans to ditch the nearly
completed Bachelor's in Theater Arts that she's six hours away from earning
from Colorado State University. Frankly, their theater program is SO bad
that almost every person cast in productions there is either on faculty or a
member of the local acting community. So she's got all of the credits she
needs in classes, but the casting parameters limited her to just becoming an
excellent techie, although she's done very well in acting and directing.
She's excellent at anything technical - costume design, dresser during the
play, set design, set construction, props gathering, finding locations and
props.

Her plans are to get out there, find a job, and work until she qualifies for
in state tuition, then get the basics out of the way at community college
and go on to a program that can lead to a producer's job.

Can you give me a general idea of what she should consider doing? She's put
a lot of thought into it. Where are good places to make social connections
- I'm talking about people who work in the industry but NOT celebrities.

Thanks in advance,

Cindy NJ
