Helllo Mopo - picked up paper today saw that Babara had passed away at
72 wow
I had the opportunity to meet her in 1976 as I was hired to shuttle her
around to interviews and also
assisted as a promotion ma for a concert she gave in Toledo. Brabar was
a very down to earth person
and was not only a Pro but also a real lokker and has a great voice. So
heres my tribute funny to Barabra
as we had some fun. Brabra was a spokesman for the National Cancer
society and she was invited to speak
at the Toledo club for a luchoen of Doctors and socialites. So I take
her there... we show up... its a black tie
affair.. It looked like tradeing places.. a real posh old money place
with linen tables and set like the preseident was comeing... so I show
up with Barabra wearing... a silk shirt OPEN like Tony in Scareface..
a maroon 3/4 leather coat..... and i cant remeber what pants probaly
flared slacks.. ! OK so I decide to keep
my Jackeet on as a way to try to not look to casual..... and we sit at
table as they ding the crstal to call attention and then Barabara leans
over to me and says Im dieing for a smoke... Now to me that was just so
surreal as she was keynote spokeswoman for the cancer society.... I
also smoked at the time...
and I was uncomfortable and was sweating inside my leather 3/4 lenth
coat !! It was a peculier
place to be and I found that i wanted to break out laughing... so Barbar
reiterates.. " I want a cig"
well when we got to the car we both just burst out laughing our asses
off.... and Im sure the Docs and socialites wondered about that one...
and yes we immediately had a smoke... I quit about 8 years ago.
I spent a week with Barbara and she was one of the genuine peopel I was
able to meet in show biz.
I never sopke to hear after that she signed me a 8 x 10 and I heard she
had a club in vegas But lost track
In the Obit today it said she was In a Elvis Movie and her big film was
" they called me Mr, Tibbs? with Sidney Poitier well Barbara thanks
for the memory. I saw her sing with a Big band and she was wonderful.
best,Tom
