In addition to this great arthouse collection, we are also selling six of
the VERY best (and most rarely seen) Star Wars posters (style C and style A
printer's proof 1sheets, style D and style A 30x40s, half-sheet, and the Empire
Strikes Back "Gone With the Wind" one-sheet, NONE of which are folded!) as well
special collections of Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren posters and lobby
cards, which includes some EXTREMELY scarce Brigitte Bardot three-sheets and
one-sheets!
A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE "ARTHOUSE" POSTERS WE ARE CURRENTLY SELLING ON EBAY:
What IS an "arthouse" poster? This is a "catch-all" term that includes
low-budget independent movies, "foreign" films (back from the days when most
foreign movies did not get a U.S. release), documentaries, limited re-releases
of classic movies, and the rare productions from major studios that were movies
with appeal to a limited audience. There were few such movies that received
any real distribution in the U.S. before World War II. After the war, some
daring distributors began releasing sexy non-U.S. movies in the U.S., and those
often did quite well in their limited releases, and theaters began to be opened
in major cities that would show such movies, and these theaters were dubbed
"arthouse" theaters. The number of such theaters increased over time, and that
network of theaters meant there was a market for independent movies with
limited appeal, and surely such theaters helped expand the nu!
mber of such movies that were made! The arthouses reached their peak in the
late 1960s, and New York City had several prominent ones, including the Thalia,
the Elgin, and others, and most other major cities had at least one such
theater, such as the TLA Theater in Philadelphia. The advent of video in the
late 1970s spelled the end of such theaters. People were less willing to go to
a theater to see an arthouse movie, when they could instead rent it on video.
There are still a very few arthouse theaters left in the United States, but not
many.
The collection offered here was assembled by a single individual over a
VERY long period of time! Many of these movies only played at a VERY limited
number of theaters (it is quite possible that some only played at a single
theater!). Posters from arthouse movies are often among the most difficult
posters to find (when compared to any of the posters from the same era). Any
longtime movie paper collector knows this to be true! Many of the posters here
are almost never offered for sale in any venue (for example, eMoviePoster has
NEVER sold over HALF of these posters before!). If you have ever looked for a
poster from one of these movies, you have probably been very frustrated, and
this week may well be your only opportunity to acquire these posters!
Finally, note that we were separately consigned a collection of Brigitte
Bardot posters and a collection of Sophia Loren posters, and because many of
the movies of these stars played at arthouse cinemas in the 1950s and 1960s
(and because the box office success of both these super-sexy stars greatly
helped most arthouse cinemas to stay in business!), we thought it made sense to
include both these collections this week. Also, we were consigned six of the
very best Star Wars posters by an advanced collector, and we put them at the
very start of this auction (for no real good reason!).
REMEMBER THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE LOTS OF EXCELLENT ITEMS THIS WEEK, every
single one of our items started at just 99 cents with no reserve so there will
surely be many real bargains and quite likely some outright steals! As of this
writing (Sunday morning, with just a couple of days left to go), 210 of these
654 items are still at their opening bid of 99 cents(!), around 350 are still
under $3, around 405 are still under $6, around 500 are under $10, and around
575 are under $20! And most of the 80 or so items that are over $20 are FAR
under their regular retail price (the ones you could find anywhere else). And
there are a HUGE percentage of items that retail for $20, $40, or $60 or more
which are still only a dollar or two each, so there are plenty of great
bargains to be had!
REMEMBER THAT WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT 99 CENTS, PLUS $9 BUYERS PREMIUM, PLUS
AN OFTEN "MIS-CALCULATED" SHIPPING THAT MEANS THOSE "99 CENT POSTERS" MAY END
UP COSTING YOU $17 EACH! In OUR auctions, you can purchase up to FIFTEEN 99
cent posters and your total cost is $14.85, plus JUST $5.50 U.S. shipping, for
a total U.S. cost for those 15 posters of just slightly more than a $20 bill!
Remember that YOU can't get those great deals if you aren't bidding! AND YOU
HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE! If you place a bunch of fairly low bids but only get one
or two items, then you are sure to be happy, for you will have gotten some
really good deals, and have paid a very reasonable $5.50 to $10 U.S. shipping
rate, or the actual cost of getting the items to you, plus $2 for packaging
materials (if you live outside the U.S.). Even if you place a bunch of bids and
get nothing at all, you will only be out a little of your time, and no more.
REMEMBER THAT IN THESE AUCTIONS (as in all our online auctions), THERE ARE NO
OUTRAGEOUS BUYER PREMIUMS! Other auctions charge around 20% EXTRA, for no other
reason than to line their pockets with your money, and some even have a $9
minimum buyer premium, so that a $1 purchase carries a NINE HUNDRED PER CENT

auction company, you are probably still stunned by their buyer premiums and by
