Hi Channing, It is actually more of a product of the person doing the linenbacking than the actual material itself. Now I do get some linenbacked posters to frame that are on very inferior material. By that, I mean it is often very coarse and you can tell it is very cheap canvas. Sylvia uses a canvas that actually includes a bit of a silky thread content and that makes the fabric lay much nicer and the fabric is much more supple. Often in the linenbacking process, less experienced restorers use too much glue and/or too much water. In combination with the different types of fabrics, the "rippling" can be minimal all the way up to a mess to deal with. So, that's the scoop. Hope it helps.
