I finally got a copy recently of Reel Art: Great Posters From the Golden Age of the Silver Screen by Stephen Rebello and Richard Allen. It has a number of pictures of theatre fronts showing posters and some lobbies on display.
I heartily recommend the book as a general reference, btw. It has a lot of info about how posters were created and distributed during the Golden Age. It's also just a beautiful book. It is difficult to find pictures of lobby cards at the old movie theatres. They were usually on the walls in the outer and/or inner lobby (hence the name lobby cards) of the theatre. After you bought your ticket at boxoffice ticket window, you could see the lobby cards on the walls before you entered the theatre. Then, you would walk inside into the inner lobby and see posters and maybe lobby cards of comming attractions on those walls. I have a listing of over 300 Cinerama theatres on my web site at http://cinerama.topcities.com/ . I have pictures of some of the theatres but they are mostly of the front, auditorium or projection room. Not many pictures were taken of the lobby because it was a pretty boring area of the theatre. I did find a few pictures of lobby cards at these theatres (see below) http://cinerama.topcities.com/town.htm - under the marquee http://cinerama.topcities.com/ctcolonial.htm - first picture in the foyer http://cinerama.topcities.com/ctwarner.htm - picture below the text "Picture below from the March 17, 1965 issue of Motion Picture Herald magazine" I have sold most of my Boxoffice magazines on EBAY but, I'll check to see if the remaing ones have pictures of lobby cards in the theatre. Hi Folks, As I was going through a bunch of old photographs today, I came across the photo that is linked below. I remember someone on MOPO, some time ago, asked if anyone could show how lobby cards were display in the theatre's of old. Well, this is the Outer Lobby of the Colonial Theatre in Keene, New Hampshire, It had marble floors and brass rails. Still up and operating! My Dad took this picture of one of the people that worked for him. The left upper shows how the three sheet might be displayed (Les Girls). The 2 portable displays could be used for one sheets or lobby cards; usually one sheets except in this case. More importantly, the upper right show a beautiful decor gold frame which held four lobby cards on each side of a one sheet all separated by this gold frame. Jet Pilot is "Coming Soon" The frame has locked doors. Why, I don't know.............No one knew what we know; haha Hope some of you younger enthusiasts find this interesting and helpful.
