Michael: Public domain means the film's copyright was not renewed. This means it is copyright free to anyone to put out. Either film prints like dupes or video releases. Once the copyright is lost it can't be renewed. There are loop holes to this law in the famous case of "It's A Wonderful Life" which regained its copyright after being in public domain for many years. Director Stanley Donen film's seem to have a bad track record as far as falling into public domain (copyright not renewed). His film "Charade" fell into public domain because Universal Studio's failed to put copyright information on the original 35mm theatrical release prints. His film "Royal Wedding" fell out of copyright because it was not caught in time. Also "The Pajama Game" too. His track record has not been good but he denies some of these titles are really in the public domain. Especially the title "Charade". But if "Charade" was under copyright right now believe me Univeral would be putting ALL the bootleggers of this title out of business quickly. --Tom Pennock
