What is in our Tuesday night auctions that close TUESDAY, May 15th on eBay? This is a REALLY special auction, with 609 single lobby cards, all currently on eBay ending Tuesday, May 15th beginning around 7 PM CST! What kind of cards are in this auction? We sorted out the Charlie Chan lobby cards, the titles where we have more than three scenes from a specific movie, the title lobby cards, and the special collection of bad girl lobby cards, (which were assembled by a single collector over many years), and put all of the above at the start of the auction. Next we listed all of the scene lobby cards, with cards from just about every one of the most collected genres (of special note are the AMAZING assortment of 168 crime/detective/film noir title cards and scene cards!), covering all years. You will find many rare and desirable titles, many in really excellent unrestored condition! If you have the slightest interest in lobby cards, be sure to look every one of these cards, for there are lots of "gems" lurking among them! Some of the "better" titles include: First up, we have seven cards from It's a Wonderful Life including the title card followed by a great collection of 13 Charlie Chan cards, then five cards from Goldfinger, eight from The Birds, five from Sunset Blvd, four from Green Mansions, and eight from Let's Live a Little! Note that the great collection of 13 Charlie Chan cards including some great scenes from Charlie Chan at the Olympics, Charlie Chan In Honolulu, Charlie Chan at Treasure Island, and more! But we didn't stop there! We also have great title cards from lots of great titles include Scarlet Street, The Egyptian, Lady in the Lake, They Live by Night, Gilda R59, Mildred Pierce, Stormy Weather, Strange Door, Blithe Spirit, Ride the Pink Horse, Don't Bother to Knock, Twelve Angry Men, and much, much more! And there are also MANY great scene cards from titles like The Big Sleep, Conflict, Scarlet Claw (Sherlock Holmes), The Big Clock (two great scenes!), Lost Horizon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, In This Our Life (Bette Davis), Mask of Dimitrios, Dark Corner (great portrait of Lucy!), The Law of the Range (1928 Joan Crawford!), I Am A Fugitive From a Chain Gang, Our Dancing Daughters (another rare 1928 Joan Crawford), The Quiet Man, The Philadelphia Story (great close portrait of Hepburn and Stewart), The Lost Weekend, and many, MANY more! We really could list 100 more titles (there ARE that many special lobby cards in this auction!). Know that, in addition to the better known titles, there are also LOTS of cards from rarely seen titles. A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THE ITEMS IN OUR CURRENT SPECIAL LOBBY CARD AUCTION: Normally when we sell lobby cards, we give a generalized condition grade of "fine or better", "very good" or "very good to fine", and "lesser" for each card, but FOR THIS SPECIAL AUCTION OF 608 GREAT LOBBY CARDS, we have given a more detailed overall condition grade ("fine", "very good to fine", "very good", "good to very good", and "good", with one "fair to good") along with lots more details about the condition described in words. We did this because we know that collectors will likely spend more in this special auction of lobby cards than in our regular weekly auctions of lobby cards, so we felt this would help bidders identify items they want to bid on more easily. Of course, we could not describe every single defect, so we still strongly recommend that you look at our super-sized image to see the extent of the defects that we describe and to examine the lobby card for minor defects that we did NOT describe. IMPORTANT! There are constant rumors that "slabbing" of lobby cards is "just around the corner". Slabbing is encasing items in a hard plastic sleeve with a seal that can't be broken, and then the items are professionally graded. ANY restoration of any kind, as well as a detailed condition description is noted on the back of the sleeve. Proponents of slabbing say that it takes all the guesswork out of grading items, and it brings lots of new collectors into a hobby, who are no longer afraid of buying an over-graded item, or one with hidden restoration. It is indisputable that slabbing attracts a lot of "investors" into a hobby, and almost always slabbing of items is followed by a sharp rise in the price of "high grade" UNRESTORED items. If the people who currently "slab" other collectibles begin to do so with lobby cards, then it is very likely prices will rise on them as well. This focus on "high grade unrestored" lobby cards is especially relevant to this auction, because the lobby cards we are selling were consigned to us by a long-time collector, who was lucky enough to have started collecting in the mid-1960s! This collector primarily bought his lobby cards from several poster exchanges that would sell him lobby cards, and he was able to get lots of great lobby cards from all genres and eras. Not only did this collector try very hard to find lobby cards in the best possible condition, but he was the type of collector who really disliked ANY restoration of any kind, including tape, and he left the cards "as he found them", which will make collectors who prefer "unrestored, high grade" lobby cards VERY happy! If you care about finding lobby cards in high grade unrestored condition, you will be absolutely amazed by the cards in this auction (as some of them look as though they could have just been printed, but we assure you they were not!)! Note that a HUGE percentage of the lobby card lots in this auction have never been restored at all (approximately 76% of the cards), and most of the cards that have had any restoration have only had amateur tape restoration (which we clearly note on EVERY card's condition description)! There are a very few cards that HAVE HAD professional restoration, and we also clearly note which cards those are. We graded an amazing 40% of the lobby cards as being in "fine" condition (and OUR "fine" is surely the equal of most dealers' "near mint" or "mint"), and we graded another 28% of the lobby cards as being in "very good to fine" condition, which surely equates to most dealers' "fine"! When you look at these cards, and you see lobby card after lobby card being described as being in "fine" condition, don't think that we have lowered our standards at all. It is just a testament to the incredible selectiveness of the collector who consigned these cards! Of course, this auction also contains some lobby cards that are in "lesser" condition, but please remember that we are far more harsh condition graders than any other movie paper seller we know of, and many collectors can accept items in our "good to very good" condition (and might find that they would grade as "very good" from most other sellers!). Many of the items we are selling this week that are in lesser condition are EXTREMELY rare items, ones you might wait decades to see again in ANY condition!
