Now, lo and behold, I've found websites of reputable dealers that over original rolled one sheets from such titles as "The Wild Bunch" or "Bonnie and Clyde" or "Cool Hand Luke" at incredibly high prices without an explanation HOW and WHY they are rolled. Cleveland, Ohio (my home town) was the home of four major lithography printing companies, including Morgan Litho which is still in business. Many, if not most, of the movie posters printed in the 20th Century came out of Cleveland. An employee of Continental Litho was in the habit of taking copies of posters that he liked, before they were machine folded. When he died, about ten or twelve years ago, his widow sold the posters to Collector's Warehouse. I went through the posters, which were a mixture of some very collectible titles, along with lots of titles of little interest. I believe the titles were from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. I still have all that I purchased. There is no question in my mind that these posters are completely authentic. In a 1992 Christie's sale, Bruce Hershenson sold an unfolded copy of a 1935 1-sheet from Marlene Dietrich's DEVIL IS A WOMAN. The poster sold for $46,000+. The origin of the unfolded poster was similar to the above situation. An employee was struck by the beauty of the Dietrich poster, and grabbed one before it was machine folded. I believe, his family sold the poster after his death. Marty Davis Vintage Film Posters 43215 N.
