Another thought. I'm a buyer, not a seller. I wish more people would bid
the amount they are willing to pay, and just bid it when they see the
auction. Of course this is what's advocated by everyone, but even if there
were only a handful of snipers out there, they'd ruin it, so we are forced
to play their game. Nevertheless, I still *try* to bid my highest amount,
and bid early, and often just let it go if outbid. Sometimes I'll raise my
bid. But when I REALLY want the item, I will snipe, because I'll lose it
almost every time if I don't.
Sometimes snipers plans backfire - the ones that bid HUGELY just to be sure
they will win run the risk of someone else doing the same thing, and then
having the auction end at a price MUCH higher than they are actually
willing to pay. I know sometimes these people will place a bid of $1000 or
something on an item that will probably end at around, say, $100, because
nobody is going to beat their bid, no matter what. Unless someone else
tries the same tactic and bids, say, $900... and the original bidder is
legally bound now to pay over $900 for the item! (Next step - deadbeat
bidder, anyone? ;) )
Does anyone else remember eBay from when they were called AuctionWeb, and
the buyers and sellers were all universally honorable and friendly and
helpful? :)
