Thanks for the report, Dave.
Sounds like your first Cinevent was a winner for you and a good time for all.
Hopefully my future includes a first Cinevent as well.
All the folks you met are people I would eagerly love to meet as well (are
you reading, Ed and Susan-- LAMP-- right here in the NOLA area!!??!)

I'm so glad it was such a positive experience but with that bunch of people--
and lots more you didn't get to meet-- it must have been a ball.

Best and hope y'all had a ball.

          Hi, all;

Just got back from Columbus, my first experience with Cinevent. Got in
Thursday night, but had to leave yesterday to take care of business back home
(Ontario, Canada) today. Still, I got in a full day on Friday and got to meet a
lot of folks I've only known online up to now.

Of course, that means I missed yesterday's auction, so you'll have to get the
skinny on that from someone else.

Among the MoPo members I was delighted to meet and chat with:

Zeev Drach - aka Lobby Card Invasion - who got onto the topic of lost films,
speculating that there may be hundreds from the silent era and among the early
talkies. Sounds like a good MoPo topic to me...

Ed Poole (of LAMP) described his dealers' market, how the LAMP database works
and his efforts to finish fixing up his house in the aftermath of Katrina.

The indefatigable Rich Halegua, whose campaign to promote MoviePosterBid.com
resembled a run for office, which I think he ought to seriously consider since,
given his forthrightness, it'd inject some badly needed Bulworth moments in the
endlessly tedious US presidential campaign.

Talked to lots of other folks, too, about the state of the hobby, where it's
headed, what's up, what's down, and, most importantly, whether there's much of
a future for get-togethers like this. As a lot of you know, attendance for some
of these events is in decline (can't speak for Cinevent myself, since this was
my first), and a number have disappeared from the map.

The consensus seems to be it's a convergence of the primacy of the Internet
(including obviously eBay) over face-to-face dealings and an important
demographic shift among the collectors (not to mention the population in
general). It would be a pity if collectors' shows were to vanish altogether
since we would then be lacking the rewarding personal contact, but it may be
inevitable.

Missed out on meeting Sean Linkenback and Bruce, though I saw them both
there. I think Sean may have been too busy wheeling and dealing to spend much
time at his table (at least on Friday), but he had a fantastic selection of
sci-fi and monster lobbies. And I think Bruce was busy himself renewing old
acquaintances. I'll have to catch you guys at a future show.

I have to say I spent so much time in the dealers' rooms I missed the films
completely! Too bad, since there was a lot of fun stuff on the bill but there's
only 24 hours in a day, at least on this planet.

One of the highlights for me was a sizeable selection of European posters
that were brought in by a couple of Spanish sellers. Gorgeous pre- and post-war
Swedish, Belgian, French, Italian, Spanish (of course) and even Russian posters
(at least I think they were Russian, the text was in the Cyrillic alphabet).
Spectacular stone lithos of Garbo, Dietrich, Cooper, Gable, Bogart et al. And
two beautiful Belgian stone lithos of a couple of Lon Chaney flicks (which I
have to look up)! A Black Cat Spanish! Keaton Swedish silents!

The posters were mostly laid out on tables so you could handle them (very,
verrrrry carefully), which was an added delight. Unfortunately, the prices were
pretty much in the stratosphere - some of the cheaper items were $1500-$2500 -
so I can't say they made many sales, but it was an absolute thrill to see them
there.

That's it for now, gone on too long as it is. I'll leave it to others to add
their experiences...

  Thanks,
  Dave
