(DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SOPRANOS FINALE.)
I'm not so sure, Freeman. Were the "familiar" hit men you say are
"familiar" seen in some other context previously? Or were they FBI tails?
The ending is ambiguous and brilliant because of it. Either way -- the
family has been gelded. Why? Because my first impression was yours -- that
the "whacking" takes place moments after the camera goes....
But as I thought about it more -- there is a second back-story that creator
David Chase kept pushing into my face -- whereby the FBI is complicit in
ensuring Tony's survival -- so that the years it has spent trying to get him
indicted, finally pays off. After Tony's rival gang leader is literally
"popped" -- the FBI agent briefly celebrates, saying, "Damn, were going to
win this thing!
The dark opera ending that I prefer, of course, is the one you mention -- it
seems more fitting. But isn't it like David Chase to leave the audience NOT
QUITE SURE? This is brilliant because David Chase I felt was never going to
go conventional on us and show us a "Hollywood ending." I think people may
argue about this ending for a long time...

Okay I don't know how many Mopo'ers were regular viewers of
Sopranos.......but I truly spent my Sundays at 6:00 or 9:00 (East Coast
transmission or West Coast airing many time both) since its first HBO
airing. When between seasons I turned into a relentless channel switcher
looking for movies or some programming approaching SOPRANO'S quality and
unless it was a true classic
on TCM it proved a futile exercise.
The stunning series ended tonight in brilliant fashion, building suspense oh
so slowly while attending to loose story lines. Then Tony having a rare
dinner just with the wife and his adult kids at a favorite diner, while
familiar hit men quietly enter and then.....................literally.
Those dots will leave you spellbound.
As for inserts if doubtful don't buy. That simple. Pass it on.
