Hi, Everyone,
Just thought I might add my two cents about this Manhattan Style B one
sheet uproar if anyone out there wants to hear. I've done business with Greg
Egbert over the past 15 years and have never had reason to question his
scruples. Just a week ago or so, I went onto David L.'s website and
discovered
quite a few 60's and early 70's one sheets that were rolled in mint condition
with no stamp of the films title, etc on the back of the poster, being sold at
ultra high prices. I made a statement that having so many of these rolled one
sheets (from a time before the practice was to roll one sheets) seemed a bit
strange at best. I mentioned it to a couple of old-school dealer friends of
mine and they agreed with my trepidation. Hey, I have at least 30 rolled
Star Wars Style C one sheets that were sold to me 12 years ago or so---the guy
who sold them to me said they were printed from the same plates as the
original in 1979 or 1980. They're all still rolled in a tube--stored
away---because
frankly, I don't know what to do with them. If I chose to do so, I could
say that they were given to me by an exec at Fox or a guy who was in charge of
printing the posters---saying he grabbed them before they went through the
folding process.
In effect, I could create a different reality and probably sell them for 4
or 5 hundred bucks each. But instead, they remain rolled in that tube----and
that's where they'll stay.
Greg Egbert has probably been in this hobby a lot longer than David
Lieberman has. To tell you the truth, I'm not a big fan of people who fink on,
rat out---whatever you want to call it---other people unless there might be a
pattern of unscrupulous behavior where a warning is truly warranted. Tell
me, how do I know FOR CERTAIN that David's story about acquiring those 60's
rolled one sheets is 100% accurate. Who knows--maybe he's just better at
keeping quiet that Greg Egbert. Like I said, for 15 years I've never had a
problem
with Greg. It just seems awfully strange to me that the person who
announces to ALL of MoPo something Greg told him---that maybe he was never
going to
act upon anyway--who knows---is the same person that I believe deserves to be
under scrutiny for his own somewhat questionable inventory. With posters any
of us have acquired, we can very easily create our own reality and those who
want to believe, will believe. Hell, I'm sure I could find LOTS of
believers if I created a new reality about those Star Wars Style C one sheets.
I think some of us would be better off not worrying about the splinter
that's in another MoPo'ers eye because there very well might be a log in our
own.
